The simplest cosmetic treatment of all. Though this is often carried out as part of more extensive treatments (see our ‘cosmetic dentistry’ page) it does give excellent results just on its own.

It is a fact of life that as we all get older our teeth get darker, and most people will see a big difference just whitening their teeth. Without doubt whitening takes years off your age, is with you 24 hours a day and with only a small amount of maintenance lasts indefinitely.

While there are various ways of carrying out whitening it is best done under the guidance of a dentist. Here at Portland Street Dental Care we have opted for the home whitening system. This a simple matter of wearing custom made trays with whitening gel at night, monitored by Matthew Jones our dentist, until the desired effect is reached. The great advantage of this system is that once achieved, whitening only needs to be ‘topped up’ every 6 months or so (or maybe just before an important interview/date or maybe holiday) with just a couple of nights of wearing the trays with gel again. The trays if looked after gently, they will last years and the gel is available directly from us.
If you are not a patient of ours you will need a short consultation for us to take a shade guide and to make sure that tooth whitening will mean good results for you – we will tell you honestly if there is some reason why we wouldn’t recommend it for you. If this is the case (and it usually is) your own trays can be made for you within the day and often within a couple of hours.
